New Year’s Resolution

New Year’s resolutions… here we go again. Does it feel like the same cycle every single year? You end the year saying “ok, that’s it – next year I am going to make a change and I will start on the 1st!” But then you realize the 1st is on a Saturday, so you say, “Ok I am starting the 1st Monday of the year.” But then the 1st Monday of the year was too overwhelming. You get into a cycle, a rut. I’m here to try and help. Do you have new year’s resolutions for 2022? Have you been putting them off… (like I have this blogpost). Have you thought about resolutions for your workplace this year? Have you thought about your resolutions for your professional life this year? This blog will give you some insight in how to overcome the rut and stick to your resolutions this year.

I personally tend to stray from resolutions, I find them stressful and very demanding; but this year I wanted to start small. It is important to be realistic and stop putting barriers up that hinder your success. What is the reason we continue to push them away, even though we want to succeed so badly? Comfort. We get uncomfortable with the unfamiliar.

“Success is on the other side of your comfort zone”

The most important thing to implement is the understanding that we are not perfect, let’s say your resolution is to eat healthier. If we mess up and eat McDonald’s we cannot get into the mindset of “well I already messed up might as well eat a cookie… or four.” We have to stick to our goals, ok you ate the McDonald’s that is not going to hinder your success, but the wrong mindset will. Instead we say “well I ate something I really wanted, but now I have to continue on the right path.” We have to understand it is ok to mess up. We’re only human 😉 This mindset will help you better to achieve your resolutions this year whether they are personal or professional.

“Personal vs. Professional”

There are two very important distinctions when it comes to resolutions – private and professional. Whether your resolutions are for your private life or your professional life, the tools to help get you started are the same. Consistency is key, not perfection. According to the New York Times it is essential to understand the differences between personal and professional resolutions. The importance of these distinctions is how you will achieve success in being committed to them. Personal resolutions are attributed to your well-being and personal care, whilst professional resolutions are generally your work or school space and what you can achieve better.

Resolutions, especially the professional ones, are mostly proven to be ineffective due to overreaching and being too far beyond one’s capabilities or thinking “too big”.

There are however ways we can stick to them. Here are a few tips and tricks to stick to your professional resolutions this year:

Start small: Find something you can incorporate into your everyday life without becoming too overwhelmed.
Visualize why you want the change. Why is this resolution important to you? Why did you want to change this aspect of your professional life?
Think logically and realistically. Do not trap yourself with overreaching ideals which you feel cannot be achieved.
Be honest with yourself. Is this something you really want to do? Or are you just doing this because of the pressure of expectation?
Set little goals and schedule milestones.
