A PowerPoint is a PowerPoint. And a book is a book?

Learn the differences!

An unnerving story

PowerPoint Presentations are the most used form of presentation out there. There have been other presentation software trials and hypes that reach from “something better” to “don’t use slides”- Death by PowerPoint but may we point out that it is the most ridiculous way to blame bad content and badly created slides on PowerPoint itself?

There are more than 30 million PowerPoint presentations created each day and most of them don’t fulfill their purpose. They are a cluttered assembly of information and have the communication value of a phone book.

How come we can’t get our Point into the PowerPoint?

To start with the anger that many people feel towards this presentation software we have to step back and forgive them, because they are caught in one of two groups: they either belong to the group of people who simply don’t know how to use PowerPoint or they belong to the group of people who suffered under such a person.

Anyway…let’s look at all the possibilities PowerPoint has to offer:

PowerPoint is usable for everyone.

See PowerPoint as what it is: A tool. A well-known tool with tons of features. Almost everyone has this program and every student can learn to use it easily. Categorizing the usage, I would say: on one hand, we have the presenters: people who speak to a crowd, classroom, customers or pitching to investors on the other hand we have communicators, people who need to convey concepts and information quickly and thoroughly. These two sections have each different usage forms but both possible in PowerPoint

PowerPoint supports your spoken word

Use the PowerPoint presentation only to proclaim bullet points, graphics and images or even a video if there is something you want to share in motion or sound. For real “presenters”, and here we are talking about people who speak and explain things in front of an audience voluntarily, the slides can be emotionally designed to cause the desired reaction.

Most PowerPoint tips you’ll find online cater mainly to this form of presentation. Keep your PowerPoint slides “clean” and “zen”. “Emotionalize” your content. Work with a lot of images. No more than 3 bullets per slide. These are all helpful tips, if the topic you talk about is presented by a speaker and the PowerPoint presentation doesn’t need to fulfil the multi-purpose range of corporate scripts.

PowerPoint lets you use even parts of a presentation

PowerPoint is used throughout corporations to communicate. No other tool has the possibilities to display everything you need to explain and show the necessary images to the text work. When you want to share highlights or parts of a presentation which you considered helpful and important, it is so easy to use one or two slides or even just separate images and graphics. Everything within the PowerPoint file is 100% reusable for your own needs. Naturally you can easily adapt useful graphics and slides to your own design or keep the format as is with the helpful copy functions.

The Prezi Affair

What a hype around the awesome Prezi Presentations. Everything was moving and swooping and zooming and everyone was screaming “yeay, finally… something that will substitute the stupid PowerPoints FOREVER” .  Let me pause here and laugh for a second *hahahaha

Go ahead and take a part of a Prezi, you need to show to your colleagues and then we talk again.

So, stop condemning PowerPoint per sé and start embracing its features and be sure… it’s not going anywhere. ?
